Winter Camping: Try It Out
Winter camping, that is crazy, might be the response of some people but really it can be quite the adventure. For those that have tried it; it is a wonderful adventure in nature with the opportunity to enjoy the other side of the coin from those hot summer outings.
Rather then let the elements keep you boxed inside your house why not try adventuring out into nature and see if up close from another perspective. There are advantages to winter camping, like no bugs, no snakes, no humidity, no obsessive heat and crisp clean air.
Now people might ask, can winter camping be dangerous? Sure it can and so is sitting in front of the TV all winter! All you need to do is educate yourself about winter camping and then plan your first trip. If you think you are a know it all and just head out into the winter to camp you probably will find yourself in a dangerous situation because you are unprepared. You will also be well advised to try out your winter camping skill in 20 degree weather rather then winter weather that is below zero Fahrenheit.
What about camping gear for your winter outing? There are a couple things you might want to be sure you have in the winter that are not so important in the summer. For starters you will want some warm gear. This will include boots, snow suit or snow pants and jacket with hat, and mittens or gloves. Other items that will be helpful will be a sleeping bag that is rated for cold weather. Next be sure to bring along a pair of snowshoes as they will make hiking trough the snow covered land much easier. Also you should bring along a camp shovel in case you need to move some snow around. Also a whisk broom can be helpful if you need to clean your tent of any freshly fallen snow.
